A national tragedy considered as a driving force in American textile workers safety measures and labor unions (interest group) in the early 1900s: Watch the video and post a comment by Wednesday on this event and whether you knew about this event before seeing the video.
This was such a tragic event. It is so sad that so many young lives were lost. I do agree with Michael that some of those women are hero's by helping out others before themselves knowing that their end was coming. I think I've heard a little about this event but not to this extent.

I had never heard about this before this class and video. It gave me a great realization as to how bad this effected the world back then when it compared it to the Twin Towers and that horrific incident. I cannot imagine how their society bounced back after that happened. I see how hard it was and still is to overcome the Twin Towers.
ReplyDeleteI do see the comparisons between the two, like the hero's that lost their lives trying to help others.

I had heard about this event once before in a high school history class. This is a sad and tragic event and it is terrible that these people had to go through. Sadly there were a lot of lives lost, but thankfully there were heroes willing to risk their lives to save others.

I've never heard about this incident and I am saddened by the cruel treatment of the workers and their families by the court that released the owners and the men responsible for locking those women in that building creating a death trap. It was shameful as a nation that they got away with what should've been called premeditated murder! Just because they were rich and afraid that the workers would unionize and get better working conditions and pay the families and serve jail time! It was not to first or the last in the US but it woke a sleeping giant(AFL-CIO labor union)
ReplyDeleteI knew about this event before watching the video because we discussed it in World History in high school. If the working conditions during this time weren't so horrible, this incident probably could have been prevented. Although this was devastating, it helped improve the working conditions and raised standards that businesses had to follow.

I knew about the Triangle Shirtwaist fire before because I learned about it in my U.S. History high school class. It is a tragedy that this happened, and so easily it could have been prevented. The only silver lining of this horrible incident is the latter rise of unions and improved conditions that came after this event

My teacher did mention this in my High School History class, but I didn't remember a lot about it. It's terrible that because of someoneon's carelessness that so many young lives were lost. There's a bright side to thise though. Out of this came the improvement of the working conditions, and the labor unions were more active. This was totally preventable. At least there were heroes who saved others while they died themselves.

I had never heard about the Triangle Shirtwaist fire before this class, and it really surprises me. It surprises me because these women lost their lives, and because of that history was changed for the safety of adult and minor workers of the future. I would say that they are definitely heroes. I’m glad to hear that the state recognizes them every year. That way these women will never be forgotten.

I think the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire was so horrible. It was such a tragedy and so many people lost their lives. At least this lead to better safety measures and child labor laws. Other than this video I have never heard of the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire before. I feel that more people should be more educated on this fire because it's not fair to the people who died or their families if they are forgotten.

I vaguely heard about the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire years ago in my high school history class. I thought it was horrible then, and still think it is just a horrible tragedy now. I am beside myself that someone could lock the doors knowing all of the young females that would suffer inside. I think that more should be educated on this piece of history, and these women should not be forgotten or unknown.

I did vaguely hear about this incindent once before but it was never in much detail so i was unaware of the severity and its impact. Although the event was terrible, it did help pass saftey and labor laws that people benefited from.

ReplyDeleteThis is a very sad story that I have never heard before. The shocking part of this film is that these young women worked for 4-7 dollars a week from 6am to 8pm at night. I'm glad that things have changed over the years and women have the same oppurtunities as men when it comes to having a job.
I somewhat remember hearing about this in my 8th grade History class. I think its terrible that those women had to work under those type of conditions and I am glad that after these events lawmakers felt it necessary to make changes so that events like this could never happen again.

It is a shame that those women had to die that way. Those women stand for something now. There are laws now that prevent those kinds of things from happening. The owners of the factory did not get any punishment other than to pay $75 per death. They should have been punished for locking the doors and not having a way for the women to escape. It saddens me that a tragic event needs to take place before laws are put into effect.

I honestly have never heard of the story, however it was very shocking to me, but I definitley beieve this happened. I thought it was terrible that women had to work suck long shifts for such low pay. Im glad this does not take place in society today, and the fact that it is possible for women to make more than men today is inspiring.

I think its horrible that something like this could have happened. I didnt hear about this untill this class/assignment. Its horrible that the boss would think to lock the door. At least this event helped to increase working conditions and served as an example.
ReplyDeleteI think this is a very tragic event that happened. Is it is very sad that something like this would happen but I am glad that workers’ rights and other benefits changed after this event. I also think that the man in the video who is trying to restore the grave stones is doing something that is need to preserve what is left to remember all of the victims and what they died for.

This tragedy is shocking I never knew of this until we talked about this in class. I felt like the owner should of received life in prison and all the company money and wealth should of went to the families of the victims. Also, i envy the women in this tragedy because the scarified their lives for others when they could of just save themselves. they deserve a day of remembrance for the things they did that day.

I may have briefly heard about it in another class but I didn't know the details of the story. It is a horrible tragedy to have happened and it had to be paralyzing to watch it happen. To know they were powerless to help all those women. Could not the inside door have been broke down to get to the women? It is a shame these women had to suffer and die before changes were made for better work safety and workers compensation. Greedyness of the 2 owners also killed these women. I wonder if the door would have been locked if men were working instead of women? Women's worth was pretty low back then. I agree with the gentleman that is keeping their memory alive, these women are hero's. Because of the changes that were made because of their death they have saved countless other lives. ReplyDeleteI have heard about this before, I've heard about it in my high school history classes! We studied this and read about it! It is terrible because of what those women had to work in and how they were treated! But i also believe they've changed our life's!

I've heard of this story before in previous classes. It was a terrible tragedy that caused deaths of many young woman and tore families apart. However the positive side of it is it opened eyes to see it was needed to create better and safer working conditions. Also,I'm proud that people respect the woman that died that day by creating prayer flags and memorials in memory of each and every one of them individually, to honor them for what they've done for us. This was a huge part of American history and is a great influence on woman's rights and working conditions today.

I have never heard this story and i'm glad I haven't. It awful what those women and their families had to go through because of that tragic event. I'm currently taking a introduction to social welfare class and in that class we learned that every policy that's placed in effect to this day was established because of a bad that happened leading to the policy. Sadly this is an example of one of those bads.Yes I am happy that a change happened to ensure it never happens again but I am still deeply sad that this had to happen in order to do so.

I heard this story in high school. It is terrible that these women had to die because of poor treatment and conditions. They open the doors for people to see how bad women rights were. For that, I thank them for sacificing their lives to give other women the right to stand up for equal opporuntiy.

I heard about it before in my ninth grade history class I think. I didn't remember how horrible it really was though. I'm just glad that something good did come from it so it's not like it happened for no reason. Although I do wish it hadn't happened.
ReplyDeleteI have not seen this video before but I think that it is very sad that these innocent people lost their lives.
