Assignment #3: Little Rock Arkansas

Watch the first half hour of this video re: the integration of the Little Rock, Arkansas schools, and respond to each of the following questions (with your own answers):

    3. They where 9 black teenagers that had go greats so they where given the option to go to little rock school.

    4. She was one of the 9 black students, and when they were told they could go to the school, she went off on her own and walked alone through the mob and just sat there waiting to go to school.

      2. The National Guard was the law breakers.. They stopped the Black kids from attending school. And when they got tired of fighting their own, they let them through barriers...

    9. I personally am grateful for these 9 strong young people because they played a very important role in the way society is today. Although, it is unfortunate that they had to go through it.

    5. President Eisenhower had convinced Governor Faubus that the state could resist federal authority. He also felt that Arkansas could not be allowed to overrule the decision of the court.
    6. The Supremacy Clause was came into play when Faubus did not allow segregation and Eisenhower said it was unconstitutional and federal law took precedence over state law. This allowed each student to have a National Guard escort each student to their classes.
    7. Minnie Jean had taken her chili and dumped it on a white students head.
    8. Governor Faubus removed the National Guard, and only left only the city police. The following year he closed down all high schools to halt integration.
    9. The decisions that the Little Rock made to go into Central High School has made it possible for all people of a different ethnicity to have an equal opportunity to receive an education. This video has really upset me, because I felt that state officials didn’t want to segregate schools to get the vote of the people. I’m glad those 9 students have left an impact on history. I am grateful to them for making it possible for me.

    9. I think that those 9 students were very brave and have greatly impacted history. Without their actions it could have taken much longer to desegreate schools.

    9. I believe that the Little Rock 9 were extremely brave and put a major mark in our history. Without this group of children desegregation may not have been able to be achieved for years to come. They stood not only for equal education for black children, but all ethnic groups.

    The National Guard was sent to Central High School by Governor Faubus to deny the black students to integrate in the school.

    They were a group of nine high school students who was selected to attend Central High School under the new federal law, signed by President Eisenhower. They were initially kept out of the school by the Arkansas National Guard, but President Eisenhower sent in federal troop to protect and integrate the nine students.

    4. What happened to Elizabeth Eckford?

    On the first day of School she was broken off from the group and had to walk alone. There was an angry mob that harassed her as she walked to the school building only to be turned away by the National Guard.

    5. How effective was President Eisenhower in this national crisis?

    President Eisenhower’s plan to use federal troops worked for a while until some states began to oppose the federal law again. They began to use other tactics like closing the school completely.

    6. How did the "supremacy clause" of the U.S. constitution come into play?

    The states tried to say that there laws to keep segregation were valid when in fact the federal law that was passed has precedence over all the previous states laws.

    7. What did Minnie Jean do that was so unexpected?

    She was being harassed by a white student in the lunch line so she took her hot chili and poured it all over the student getting her expelled.

    8. What was Governor Faubus' final solution to stop integration In Little Rock?

    The governor took away all the National Guard troops and replaced them with local and state police to stop the children from entering.

    I think that the integration a school enforced by the federal government was a very big push to help combat the racial tensions of this time. I believe that if this law wasn't past at a federal level that today some states still might not conform to integrating city schools.

    5. President Eisenhower was somewhat effective in the crisis by using troops at first but when that had conflict he the went to other forms of "policing" like closing the schools all together.

    2.The national guard block the school off from the black kids so they couldn't inter.

    3.The little rock nine was a group of black kids that was very smart so they were giving the opportunity to attend central high.

    4.Elizabeth was separated from the group of black kids and she was trying to inter the school and a crowd of white people was brutally harassing her trying to make her leave.

    5.President failed at his plan because he almost got the kids hurt and killed. Also, he didn't plan out how to get the governor to go with his plan.

    6. The supremacy clause help the black kids by giving them their own bodyguard from the national guard to protect them while at school.

    9.I feel that these kids are courageous because it take a lot of determination and patience and bravery to go back to that school everyday and deal with everybody messing with them and calling them names. Also, I feel it should of been more protected at the school then it was because they could of got hurt badly if the crowd would of got crazier.

    9.) This was a very horrible time in our nation's history and must have been very disturbing to these students. I feel that they were very brave to go to school each day regardless of what may happen to them just so they could receive a diploma.

    9.I think it’s sad to see all the hard ache the Little Rock 9 went through but they made a huge impacet in history. I can’t imagine hating a group of people so much and treating them so horribly.

    1. Governor Faubus was totally against integration. He felt he was defending his heritage.
    2. The National Guard was brought in to maintain order and also to keep the black students from entering Little Rock High School.
    3. The Little Rock 9 were the 9 black students that was chose by the board of education to go to Little Rock High School. The major said they would start the integration process slow.
    4.Elizebeth Eckford was one of the black students to go to Little Rock. She was late meeting the other students so she walked by herself amongst an angry mob.
    5. People felt he lacked the leadership to assert the federal law in Little Rock.
    6. According to the supremacy clause if there is a disput between the state and local governments then the federal government prevails over the state. And Presedent Kennedy enforced the law.
    7. She dumped chili on a white kids head that had been harassing her.
    8. Governor Faubus closed down all the high schools in Little Rock so they didn't have to intergrate.
    9. I feel the goveror was acting as childish as the the students parents was. I think for the most part the kids would have got use to it and never thought no more about it. Kids don't know to hate unless they are taught to by their parents. I feel very sorry for the black community and all they had to endure because of their color. I thank God that things are better than they use to be. I know there is still racism but I feel it is better than it was.

    1.Governer Fabus was moderate at first. He knew that he needed the white's vote so he had to approve of racial segregation in the schools.

    9. I have did a research project on this topic and the past and there is so much more information that was left out. I felt that these children were courageous and that they deserved to have the same education offered to them as the whites did.All of this fighting paid off in the end because now I can sit in a classroom and have the same educational rights as the white.

  21. 1. Govenor Faubus was furious at this Court decision; a fierce advocate of state rights, he even went so far as to personally block the entrance of an Arkansas school.

    2. They aligned themselves with the whites and intially only allowed whites entrance.

    3. The Little Rock Nine were a group of 9 black students whose high grades enabled them to attend litte Rock, if they so chose.


    4. She was seperated from the main group, and had to face the jeering mob without any support.

    5. Eisenhower provided federal troops to enforce integration policies; but his effectiveness was greatly diminshed when states began to circumvent this in a variety of ways, even closing schools rather than allow blacks entrance.

    6.The supermacy clause of the constitution states that when federal and state law clash, federal law overrules; therefore the states were legally required to integrate.

    7. While in line for lunch, she was repetdely harassed by a white student; she retalated by emptying the contents of her bowl on the students head.


    8.He removed the National Guard and opted instead for state and local law enforcement officers to blockade the schools.

    9.This tragic event really highlights the irrationality and hatred that racism spawns; but at the same time, illustrates how far we have come in race relations since that time.
